Yesterday Kidlet #3 didn’t have school. We went to Trader Joe’s to pick out some foods to try. His grandma told us about how she goes there for dinner for her and grandpa. Before we left Mom asked us to get some chocolate cat cookies.
The weather was beyond horrific. It was raining buckets straight down. Kidlet wanted to bring the 3 reusable grocery bags from Giant I had gotten last fall. Sure. Trader Joe’s is not a huge store by any means. So we went up and down each aisle. First item in the cart was a seedless watermelon for $7.99. We hit the deli type area where the meat and sliced items were. Kidlet wanted to get a whole chicken, but I said lets do that another night. I just found a recipe for a 40 clove garlic chicken I think I am going to make one night. We hit the frozen food aisles. He picks up some pancakes, not realizing they are gluten free ones, but hey what he doesn’t realize won’t hurt him at this point. We then get some frozen strawberries since the fresh ones were yucky looking. We also got a container of Lobster Ravioli, yummy! I can’t wait to try that. Then we hit the frozen food aisle, where we got a bag of the garlic chicken stir fry. This had pasta, chicken, corn, broccili, and carrots in it with a garlic sauce. Kidlet #1 loves broccili, but Kidlet #3 doesn’t. Kidlet #3 picked it out, so I made it tonight for dinner. Kidlet#3 was working on his homework and said things looked good etc. I am looking at it like; gee both of them are going to complain about this dinner. I will add pictures in a few minutes to show you the work in progress :) I tell the kids that dinner is ready. I ask the kidlet #3 if he wants more garlic sauce on the stir fry. He tastes the sauce and says to add more. YEAH I am thinking silently. He has already told me not to put the carrots in because he doesn’t like cooked ones. I told him we couldn’t take them out but they would have sauce on them. I pull out the watermelon that we had cut up last night and the pineapple that we got at TJ’s too.
Kidlet #3 serves himself about 1.5 cup serving of the stir fry mix. He even got broccili on his plate. It serves 4 it says and there are 3 of us. He adds more garlic sauce. Whatever works is what I am thinking. I do the same for my portion. We sit down and wait for Kidlet #1 to come downstairs and join us. We go ahead and start eating. Kidlet #3 says it is ok, as he puts a forkful of stir fry in his mouth –with broccili on it!!!!!!!!! I was so happy and elated! I tell him that if he finishes it all he can have ice cream from the ice cream man tonight. Hey bribery works at time, and he was probably getting it anyways
Kidlet #1 finally comes downstairs and says “Oh that smells kinda of good” I was like of course it does I made it. He starts singing the line “Why do you hafta lie to me?” (his way of pushing my buttons) Then takes the rest of the stir fry which is probably half of the pan.
Everyone sits at the table with the television turned off. Tonight’s dinner has brought on miracles-no television, no complaining and clean plates! Thank you so much Trader Joe’s.
The result from tonight’s dinner on a scale of 1-5 is a 2.5 from kidlet #3. He says we can have it once a year. I call this a victory!
Moral: You just need to take your kidlets to overpriced fancy grocery stores and have them pick out some meals to eat.
