Eggwatch 2009

March 25th, 2009 · 2 Comments

For the past six years, I have had a lovely parakeet named Lemongrass. I thought for sure that Lemongrass was a boy. Last January, Dr Crum said Lemongrass was a girl. I was like yeah right. “HE” screeches etc and is a vicious biter. Lemongrass will step-up when out of the cage, not so much inside the cage. It is funny.

Last Wednesday Kidlet #3 was taking this hollowed out log out of the bottom of Lemongrass’s cage, because I hadn’t cleaned it out.  He says, why is there an egg on the bottom of the cage?  I was like “What???”  Sure enough there was an egg on the bottom of the cage. I kinda of started freaking out. It was under the log, so I am not sure how long it was there-maybe a day or two.  A few weeks ago, Lemongrass was overly friendly-sitting by the door for me to open and say step-up. Lemongrass would hop up on my finger and even come out of the cage. I thought for sure Lemongrass was dying, you know how animals change personalities before they die.

Thursday the 19th between 5:30 and 7:05 Lemongrass laid another egg, this egg was “bloody streaked”, which freaked me out. I had called Dr Crum earlier and they said make sure she is getting extra calcium via cuttlebone and eggshells/kale/egg etc.  From my research and my association with Phoenix Landing, I learned that parakeets lay eggs every other day.  Saturday I was on EggWatch 2009….it came and went with no egg. I thought for sure we were done with eggs because it has been six days since the second egg was laid, but guess what….there is now  a THIRD egg in there.  Here are some photos of the eggs. They are NOT fertile and they are cracked.  I moved them together when I was putting some paper towels on the bottom of the cage tonight.

Now the question is “Will there be six eggs?”

Yeah maybe it was the 180 in the car we did that “shook” her up.

She laid a 4th egg last night! well rather she “dropped” a 4th egg from her 2nd story perch while eating a cuttlebone! I heard a “kerplunk” and then looked in her cage and there was a 4th egg cracked.

GGRRRRR. She is not saying too much for motherhood. I guess if I had a nesting box she might go in there and lay them and sit on them..who knows.
