My voting experience, the NY Times and the Election

November 4th, 2008 · No Comments

Kidlet #3 is out of school today like alot of the kids around here, so he was going with me to vote.  He is very much an Obama supporter and wanted me to vote for Obama.  He was curious about how things worked with the voting booths etc.  We got there right before 10am.  Maybe 20 people were in line.  There was even a bake school to support the school, so we got 3 cookies and a brownie for 60 cents and gave them a dollar.  I voted in Maryland, and they are one of like 5 or 6 states that use this exclusive voting machine called Accu-Vote TS.  It was easy as pie…insert card , hit buttons etc and hit cast ballot.  Take card to white cardboard box and drop in, get sticker.  Then off to get our free donut from Krispy Kreme!

A side note on my presidental voting this year, the past two elections I was in Fairfax County/Northern VA to vote which is traditionally a Red State.  They have a big race for Governor this year as well. I had to vote in Maryland because this is where I am living now. I was so bummed because I think that Virginia is going to be a Blue State for the first time in 44 years and I didn’t get to full participate in making history. sigh-oh well.

Kidlet #3 is very confused about how the popular vote really doesn’t determine the President if he doesn’t win the Electoral votes.  I found our copy of the NY Times yesterday with this great Election coverage article called “Election Night Guide (Popcorn Included)   This is a very cool guide.   On the left side you can hit the link to Electoral Map Interactive.  It shows you were things are at this point.  Then you can adjust states to go to McCain or Obama and see how things end up.  Kidlet#3 really enjoyed this and it was a great way to explain popular vote vs electoral votes.

Poll closing times are listed on the left as well.  Kidlet #3 wants to stay up till a President is named.  I told him we can figure it out most likely by 8:30 since NC, Indiana and VA polls will have been closed.

Hope you voted and are experiencing this piece of history.  I can’t wait to see this in Social Studies books!
