Kidlet #3 and I watched the movie The Final Season this afternoon. It was a great baseball movie. It recalls the story of the Legendary Norway High School’s final season as a team and school in 1991. Norway, Iowa is all about baseball. The team had won 19 state championships and then in 1991 it was announced it was merging with another school, MAdison. They fired the coach, Jim Van Scoyoc, who had won the previous 18 championships. The school system hired his assistend, Kent Strock, who worked for him for only half a season.
It was a great movie for the kidlet, because he plays baseball now. He refers to him and one other kid as the “benchwarmers” In one of the final scenes of the movie, this kid was up to bat and kept inching towards the plate. The pitcher was pitching 92 mph plus pitches. The batter kept crowding the plate and then jumping out of the batter’s box. Eventually he ends up getting hit in the back on what would have been the 3rd strike.
Kidlet says to me “Oh so that is why I almost get hit all the time, I am too close to the plate!” I was so excited that the lightbulb went off in his head about this. He is not the best player on his team, but he does try.
I watched one of his games last Friday and was so sad for his team. The other team was solid hitters and base stealers. The first inning for the other team took 30minutes.
This is a great little film to watch about how a team never gave up on their town’s tradition of baseball.
It was noted at the end of the film , that 14 of Norway’s previous players played in the professsionals.
