Life as a Nanny - among other things

Wednesday Wisdom/Thinking Thursday combo

Yesterday I didn’t get a chance to post any wisdom so I thought I would combine it with today’s thinking post.

Recently on some of my nanny groups/message boards , a few nannies have made comments about not wanting to leave their jobs because they feel bad for the kids for xyz reasons, and then others don’t want to leave because the money is good.  All of these reasons can be valid for some. The reality is staying in a job just because isn’t always healthy.

A professional nanny that I have seen grow and blossom over the past several years said the following in response to a nanny who dislikes her job and doesn’t feel the fitting in groove yet after a few months but the pay is really good. The nanny couldn’t figure out if she should leave because she doesn’t care for the parent(s) being home and disrupting her workday with the young child or not. The nanny is truly unhappy in her position.  I personally don’t care for working with at home parents. I also can attest for staying in a position longer than needed because the pay was good but was completely unhappy. Anyways I disgressed, this is what the nanny said in regards to leaving or not:

Trust me the parents can read if you are unhappy. And staying for the good
money is not a reason to stay.  Stay because you want to and you love the
position. Stay because the parents respect you. Stay because each day you come  in
you get greeted by a big smile. Say because of the joy the child brings to
you. Stay because you can’t wait for each new day.

This is such great advice.  I truly know that I love my current job.  Yes we have many ups and downs and plan changes, but with that comes lots of praise and appreciation.  Some weeks I work 12 hrs others 50 hours.  But at the end of the day I know I am appreciated!  Heck even last night kidlet #3 stayed downstairs with me and watched Greatest American Dog and then SuperNanny.  He also told me I could learn some stuff from SuperNanny. sigh. So later today if he sasses me, he is going to the “naughty corner”  :)
